Da Emma

777, rue de la Commune Ouest, Montréal

On our map. We haven't walked through the door yet — here's why it's on the list.

Founded by Lorenzo Aureli and his wife Emma Risa, Da Emma has served traditional Roman cuisine since 1993, first in Mile End before settling on Rue de la Commune in 1998. The restaurant occupies the stone-walled cellar of a former 19th-century women's prison in Old Montreal.

The menu favors classic Roman dishes — polpette, roast lamb, fettuccine with porcini. Since Emma stepped away from the stove at 80, her daughter Olga Aureli and grandson Luca, a sixth generation of restaurateurs, carry the house forward.
